When that day comes--when we realize our children identify as Transgender or Gender Nonconforming (TGNC), our instinct is to protect them and prepare them for success as young adults.
Each member of the family has distinct needs. Most often:
Parents are overloaded with questions--there is much to learn--and anxiety, based on our lack of information.
Young children just simply "know" who they are, unaware of push-back they may face from family, friends, and strangers.
Older youth have been researching and learning for awhile, so parents have to quickly catch up to be helpful.
Siblings are approached by people with questions (extended family & friends, school administrators & peers), who ask them for clarification.
As parents, we are now aware that we can help our children to grow up healthy and keep them connected to family, who love and accept them. New pronouns, new wardrobe, new name, and sometimes a new urgency for medical & mental health support to keep them physically healthy and reduce body dysphoria.
